The Government of Meghalaya has suspended mobile internet services in seven districts for 48 hours starting from Tuesday after the firing incident that killed six people in Mukoh.
Intenret has been suspended in districts including West Jaintia Hills, East Jaintia Hills, East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, Eastern West Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills & South West Khasi Hills.
Six persons, including a forest guard, were killed in violence at the Assam-Meghalaya border in West Karbi Anglong district in the early hours of Tuesday after a truck transporting illegal timber was intercepted, officials said as per PTI.
The Assam forest department team intercepted and stopped the truck at Mukru area carrying illegal timber. The truck was going towards West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya around 3 am, West Karbi Anglong superintendent of police Imdad Ali told PTI.
As the truck tried to flee, the forest guards fired at it and deflated a tyre. The driver, handyman and another person were then apprehended, though others managed to escape, he informed.
Addressing the press over the issue, Megahlaya CM Conrad Sangma said that a total six persons including five from Meghalaya and one Assam Forest Guard got killed in the incident and the injured persons were rushed to hospital. He added that FIR has been registered by Meghalaya police in the case.
The CM further said that a magisterial inquiry will be initiated into the incident.
“I have spoken to Assam CM on the incident, and he has assured cooperation,” ANI quoted the CM as saying.
