Maratha reservation protest on Thursday (Nov 2) entered day 9. Internet services are suspended in several parts of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district, Jalna, and other areas amid violent protests.

In a bid to maintain law and order and check the spread of rumours, the shutdown will be applicable to talukas of Gangapur, Vaijapur, Khultabad, Phulambri, Sillod, Kannad, Paithan, Soegaon and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, except Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar city.

Maharashtra Police arrested 168 persons and registered 141 cases over the Maratha quota protest-related violence, DGP Rajnish Seth said, reported PTI. He added notices have been served to 146 persons under section 41 in the CrPC and properties worth Rs 12 crore have been damaged so far. The police also booked 500 people for allegedly blocking a stretch of the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway and setting tyres ablaze on Tuesday, reported PTI.

Meanwhile, activist Manoj Jarange, who has been staging an indefinite hunger strike over the Maratha reservation, on Wednesday asked the state government to clarify whether it is willing to provide reservation to the entire Maratha community and why it needs more time in granting quota, PTI reported. He made the remarks after the Maharashtra government held an all-party meeting in Mumbai.

“I don't want to know the details of what had happened during the all-party meeting. The government says they want time. They should tell us how much time it wants and also tell us what the problem is in giving reservation to the Maratha community. We will then think about it,” PTI quoted Jarange as saying.

Earlier, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde said that the reservation Maratha should be within the framework of the law and should not mete out "injustice" to other communities. Speaking after an all-party meeting, CM Shinde said all the members present at the meet agreed to the provision of reservation to the Maratha community. "However, the reservation should be within the framework of the law and without doing injustice to other communities," he said.
