On Manmohan Singh's 87th Birthday, PM Modi, Others Extend Greetings; Check Tweets

As former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh turns 87 years today, his successor Narendra Modi was one of the earliest politicians to wish the veteran Congress leader on his birth anniversary.

New Delhi: As former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh turns 87 years today, his successor Narendra Modi was one of the earliest politicians to wish the veteran Congress leader on his birth anniversary. PM Modi, who is on a week-long visit to the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), extended his good wishes and prayed for Singh's long and healthy life. Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, PM Modi wrote: "Best wishes to our former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji on his birthday. I pray for his long and healthy life." Not just PM Modi, put political leaders from Congress and other the party lines showered their wishes for the former PM and prayed for his long and healthy life. Among those were Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. "Greetings and warm wishes to former Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji on his birthday. I wish him good health and a long life," he tweeted. Even the official Twitter handle of the Congress party released a short video sharing flashback of Singh's greatest achievements. "As we celebrate Former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh, we look back at some of his greatest achievements. He has served our country for several decades & continues to do so with his renowned intelligence, humility & dedication," the video caption read. Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi then re-tweeted the video shared by Congress on Twitter to extend his wishes for the former PM. "On his birthday, let us acknowledge Dr Manmohan Singh Ji’s selfless service, dedication & incredible contribution to the cause of nation building. My best wishes to him on his birthday. I pray for his good health and happiness in the years to come," Gandhi wrote. Here are some other wishes which poured in for Dr. Manmohan Singh on his birthday: Former PM, who is a Rajya Sabha member and a renown economist, has served as the Prime Minister of India during UPA 1 and UPA 2 rule from 2004-2014. One of greatest stalwarts of the grand old party, Singh is widely praised for bringing major reforms to the nation’s economy in 1990s when he was the Finance Minister in PV Narasimha Rao’s cabinet. During his time as finance minister between 1991 and 1996, Singh was often credited for bringing dramatic revolution in country's economic policies. His 1991 budget introduced significant reforms that liberalised country's economy and opened it up to the rest of the world, setting it on a course of rapid growth.
