New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has been recommended by the Uttar Pradesh (UP) government on Friday to take over the investigation of the death of Kanpur businessman Manish Gupta. The businessman was allegedly thrashed to death by Gorakhpur police.

According to a press statement issued by the Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Awanish K Awasthi, the recommendation for a CBI probe has been made to the central government as per the directives of the UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

Until the CBI takes over the investigations, the special investigating team set up for the purpose will probe the matter, transferring the case to Kanpur from Gorakhpur.

As per the directives issued by the government, the businessman's wife Meenakshi Gupta has been appointed as an officer on special duty (OSD) in the Kanpur Development Authority. As per the PTI report, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has increased the financial aid to the family to Rs 40 lakh.

Earlier, the Kanpur businessman Manish Gupta was allegedly assaulted by the police at a Gorakhpur hotel which they had raided.

Recently, a video clip shared by the Rajya Sabha MP of the Aam Aadmi Party Sanjay Singh on Twitter has once again raised questions on the functioning of the Uttar Pradesh Police.

In the purported video, one of the officials can be seen telling the family that a court case will take years.

"The SP has said "there was no quarrel with the policemen before" means that an innocent person was murdered without any crime. So why no FIR? How to get justice?" Sanjay Singh tweeted.

Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav reached Kanpur on Thursday and met the family members of Manish Gupta. After meeting the relatives, Akhilesh lashed out at the Yogi government and the UP Police. He demanded a compensation of Rs 2 crore from the state government for the family of Manish Gupta. Along with this, he also announced financial assistance of Rs 20 lakh to the victim's family on behalf of the party.
