N Biren Singh, chief minister of the north Indian state Manipur on Sunday, tested positive for coronavirus disease. He even urged people who came in contact with him in the past few days to get tested. Singh took to Facebook, to share the news of testing positive for the deadly Covid-19 virus.


“Friends, I have tested Covid positive today after having some symptoms,” Biren wrote on his Facebook page on Sunday. “All that have been in close proximity to me in the last few days are requested to get themselves tested,” he said. “I am fine at the moment,” he further added.

A former member of the Congress, Singh started his career as a professional footballer, which landed him a job in the Border Security Force (BSF). Later, the footballer left the BSF and turned himself into journalism in 1992, where he started the vernacular daily Naharolgi Thoudang in 1992 and worked as the editor till 2001.


Turning to politics in 2002, Singh joined the Democratic Revolutionary Peoples Party and won the assembly elections from Heingang. He retained the seat in 2007 contesting with an Indian National Congress ticket after joining the party in 2003. Serving as the Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, he quit the party in 2016 before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In 2017, he retained his seat from Heingang again and was named the Chief Minister after his party gained Coalition and formed the government


Earlier in September, Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu too had tested positive for Covid 19.


According to the official data, there are 3084 active cases of Covid-19 in Manipur, while the cumulative number of positive cases recorded in the state so far stands at 21,636.

The recovery rate in the state stands at 84.73%.
