Kolkata: Veteran actor Soumitra Chatterjee passed away today at Kolkata on Sunday at 12.15 pm after battling the various complications that surfaced after he tested positive for COVID-19. He tested positive for coronavirus on October 5 and was immediately admitted to the hospital a day after. The ‘Sonar Kella’ actress has been in the hospital since then.

The ‘Teen Kanya’ actor started his journey with the 1959 Satyajit Ray movie ‘Apur Sansar’ opposite Sharmila Tagore. He then went on to receive the highest civilian award of France ‘Legion of Honour’. The ‘Ghare Baire’ actor has also been honoured with the ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the ‘Charulata’ actor will be cremated with full honours and a gun-salute. Mamata Banerjee was quoted saying by ANI, “International, Indian and Bengali cinema have lost a legend today. It is a sad day for Bengal today. He will be cremated with full honours and a gun-salute.”



The CM of West Bengal also tweeted, “Feluda’ is no more.  ‘Apu’ said goodbye. Farewell, Soumitra (Da) Chatterjee. He has been a legend in his lifetime. International, Indian and Bengali cinema has lost a giant. We will miss him dearly. The film world in Bengal has been orphaned.”

Mamata Banerjee continued, “Best known for his films with Satyajit Ray, Soumitra Da was conferred with Legion of Honor, Dadasaheb Phalke Award, Banga Bibhushan, Padma Bhushan & several National Awards. A great loss. Saddened. Condolences to his family, the film fraternity & his admirers across the world.”



Prominent personalities from the film industry including Parambrata Chatterjee, Rituparna Sengupta, Rahul Bose, Madhur Bhandarkar and others also mourned the loss of the talented actor.
