Makar Sankranti 2022: Know The Auspicious Time, Method Of Puja To Mark The Festival Of Sun God

New Delhi: The festival of Makar Sankranti, that marks the Sun God’s transit from Sagittarius to Capricorn, will be celebrated for two days on January 14 and 15 this year.

If you are planning to mark the occasion, know the auspicious timing (Shubh Muharat) and the method of worship (Puja Vidhi) for both the days.
Auspicious Timing (Shubh Muharat) On January 14 (Friday)
As per the Hindu calendar, the movement of the Sun God is set to start at 2.43pm (Punya period of Makar Sankranti) to 5.45pm. The Maha Punya Kaal of Makar Sankranti will be from 2.43pm to 4.28pm on January 14.
However, according to religious beliefs, the auspicious period for the ritual spans from six hours before to six hours after the time period of the Sun’s movement. So, on January 14, the rituals can be started from 8.43am. The Shukla Yoga will last 36 minutes till 1pm after which the Brahma Yoga will set in. The most auspicious time of the day will be from 12.09pm to 12.51pm.
Auspicious Timing (Shubh Muharat) On January 15 (Saturday)
According to the calendar, the transit of the Sun God for January 15 will start from the night of January 14 at 8.49. On Saturday, the Brahma Yoga, that is considered to be the most auspicious time for the Makar Sankranti rituals, will last till 2.34pm after which the Indra Yoga will set in. The auspicious time to perform the puja on this day will be from 12.10pm to 12.52pm.
Method of the ritual (Puja Vidhi)
The rituals of Makar Sankranti have to be performed according to some methods.
- Mix black sesame, light jaggery and Gangajal in the water before taking a bath on the day of the festival
- Fill a copper vessel with water and put on clean clothes before performing the rituals
- In the water-filled copper vessel, add black sesame, light jaggery, red sandalwood and flowers
- Chant the holy mantra and offer the water to the Sun God
- Offering the black sesame during the ritual, pray for a healthy life for yourself and your family from the Sun God.
