IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Maharashtra, Heavy Landslide Blocks NH-5 In Himachal Pradesh

The India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert in nine Maharashtra districts and said many parts of the state are expected to witness heavy rainfall in the next three days.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday issued a yellow alert in nine Maharashtra districts — Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Dhule, Jalgaon and Nashik. In its weekly weather briefing, IMD said Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh are expected to get heavy rainfall over the next three days. Earlier on Thursday, Mumbai saw heavy rainfall in urban areas causing waterlogging in several low-lying areas. The weather department has also forecast light to moderate to severe thunderstorms in several parts of India, including north Maharashtra.

In a post on X, IMD also forecast light to moderate rainfall during the night in areas such as Santa Cruz, Colaba, Dahisar, Juhu, Rammandir, Matunga and Sion.

IMD also said moderate to intense cloud formation was leading to the possibility of light to moderate rainfall activity and occasional intense spells with moderate to severe thunderstorms and lightning over parts of northwestern Uttar Pradesh and eastern Uttar Pradesh.

The maximum and minimum temperatures of Mumbai city can range between 32 degrees Celsius and 26 degrees Celsius. As per BMC, the total water stock in the lakes supplying drinking water reached 90.37 per cent by 6 am on September 7.

Landslides In Himachal Pradesh

The National Highway-5 was blocked and traffic movement was stopped due to heavy landslides near Nigulsari in Kinnaur district on Friday. Last week, many houses in Shimla’s Rampur area developed cracks after constant rain in the state, reported news agency ANI. Over 100 houses reportedly developed cracks and damages.

Earlier on Wednesday, the Odisha government donated Rs 5 crore to undertake relief and rehabilitation work for the affected population in the hill state.

So far, Himachal Pradesh has reported an estimated loss of Rs 8,675 crore since the start of monsoon on June 24 till September 5, according to the data of the state emergency operation centre. A total of 408 people, including 261, have died in rain-related incidents and 147 in road accidents in the state.
