Maharashtra: Case Registered Against Organisers As Thousands Storm Malegaon For Pro-Hijab Rally

Sachin Patil, SP Nashik Rural also pointed out that the hijab row matter is pending in the High Court, so no one should disturb law and order.

Mumbai: Maharashtra Police on Friday registered a case against the organisers of the protest that took place in Malegaon yesterday against the hijab ban in some schools and colleges in Karnataka.

According to reports, the protest was organised by organisation called 'Jamiet Ulema e Hind' and supported by some others.

While speaking to news agency ANI, Sachin Patil, SP Nashik Rural said that a case has been registered against the organisers for the protest that took place in Malegaon, yesterday and notices have been sent to the people involved in the agitation.

Patil also pointed out that the hijab row matter is pending in the High Court, so no one should disturb law and order.

Announcing the protest, agitators demanded that hijab is their right and the ban on it should be taken back. They also declared that they will observe Friday, February 11 as 'Hijab Day' in Malegaon.

Reportedly, the protest was organised without permission in the area.

Reacting to the issue, Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patel said that it isn't allowed to protest anywhere, if someone does, do it peacefully. "I appeal to political parties not to instigate &for everyone to maintain peace, cooperate with the police," he said.

Thousands of protesters, including women, stormed Malegaon of Nashik district in Maharashtra on Thursday for a pro-Hijab rally. So far, Police have booked four organisers for violating prohibitory orders under Section 144.

Karnataka Hijab Row

The controversy over hijab (headscarf) in Karnataka started on January 1, 2022, when Muslim schoolgirls at Udupi Women's Pre-University college were denied entry into the college premises as they were wearing hijabs.

Ever since then, several incidents took place across the state with Muslim girls coming to classes wearing hijabs and in protest Hindu students began donning saffron shawls. The clashes turned violent earlier this week.

Scores of Left-affiliated All India Students’ Association (AISA) students staged a protest outside the Karnataka Bhawan in New Delhi in solidarity with Muslim students over the issue on Thursday.
