Mumbai: The Maharashtra government on Sunday announced a public holiday as well as one-day mourning on Monday to mourn the demise of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar.
“The state government has declared a public holiday in the state on Monday, February 7, 2022, to mourn the demise of Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar,” CMO Maharashtra tweeted.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in the Maharashtra capital to attend the funeral of the singing legend, who breathed her last at Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital.
The mortal remains of the Queen of Melody will be consigned to flames at the Shivaji Park in Mumbai with full state honours this evening.
Condoling the noted singer’s demise, former prime minister Dr Manmohan Singh hailed Mangeshkar as the ‘Nightingale of India’ and said India has lost a great daughter.
Dr Singh said the legendary singer’s demise is an immense loss to the nation and the void is going to be impossible to fill.
"I have learnt with deepest sorrow about the passing away of Lata Mangeshkar. India has lost a great daughter. She was the 'Nightingale of India' and through her songs made an immense contribution to the cultural integration of the country,” Dr Singh said in his condolence message, PTI reported.
“My wife and I send our heartfelt condolences to the members of Lataji's family, and we pray to God for the peace of the departed soul,” he added.
Mangeshkar had tested positive for Covid-19 with mild symptoms and was admitted to the intensive care unit of the Breach Candy Hospital earlier on January 8.
The legendary singer, who was being treated by Dr Pratit Samdani and his team of doctors at the Breach Candy Hospital, was put on ventilator support after her condition worsened earlier on Saturday.
She passed away this morning due to multiple organ failure at the age of 92.
