Krishna Janmashtami 2018: Janmashtami marks the birth of Lord Krishna on earth which one of the most prominent Hindu festivals. Lord Krishna is said to be the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who took birth as a son to Devaki and Vasudev to rid Mathura-wasis (people of Mathura) from the evil and merciless rule of King Kansa, and later played a crucial role in the victory of Pandavas in the epic battle of Mahabharata. Janmashtami is celebrated in the country and abroad with religious fervour every year.
The day is also known as Sri Krishna Jayanti. It is celebrated on Ashtami or the eight the day of Krishna Paksha during the holy month of Shravana. Devotees also offer a day-long fast. Temples across the nation are decorated with lights and flowers on this auspicious day. Besides, the young kids deck up as Lord Krishna and Radha. They sit near or inside temples with people coming to watch their ‘jhaakis’. Many also offer them prasad or money in the form of appreciation.
