Kolkata: A massive fire broke out in a four-storey building on north Kolkata’s Kolutola Street, a congested locality, on Monday morning.
Though no one was injured in the blaze, a total of 24 fire tenders deployed to put out the flames were yet to control the fire till last reports came in.
The fire broke out around 11am in a factory manufacturing plastic toys on the third floor of the building, according to fire officials.
The fire is so massive that leaps of black flames can be seen from far-off areas of the city.
A fireman sustained injuries during the operation, while five persons trapped inside the building have been rescued, ABP Ananda reported.
There has been panic among people since the area is congested, which is making the job of the fire tenders more difficult.
According to reports, two families also live in the building where huge quantities of garments were found stacked inside some of the rooms.
A team from the Hare Street police station and the disaster management department have also joined the rescue operation.
The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, reports said.
Last month, a massive fire broke out in a wood godown on Nimtala Ghat Street in north Kolkata, another heavily congested area. The godown was completely gutted.
Another major fire was reported from a godown in southwest Kolkata's Taratala area too in September.
