New Delhi: A debt-ridden man from Kerala's Kozhikode won Rs 1 crore lottery two hours before accepting the token money for a newly-built house in Manjeshwar, as reported by The New Indian Express. Mohammed Bava, 50, of Pavoor in Manjeshwar and his wife Amina had decided to sell their 2,000-square-foot house built eight months ago. But at the last moment, they managed to save it after winning a lottery prize of Rs 1 crore.


At 5 pm on Sunday evening, a party was about to come to Bava's house with a token amount to confirm the deal. He had put the cost of his house at Rs 45 lakh as he had a loan of Rs 45 lakh. But the broker and the party asked to pay Rs 40 lakh and eventually still Bava and Amina agreed to sell the house and live on rent.


“I wanted Rs 45 lakh for the house because we had a debt of Rs 45 lakh. But the broker and the party were haggling for Rs 40 lakh,” said Bava, as quoted by The New Indian Express.


Amina had taken a bank loan of Rs 10 lakh and the couple had borrowed another Rs 20 lakh from their relatives to build the house. “Soon after that, we conducted the marriage of our second daughter and we were in a bigger debt,” Bava said.


His 22-year-old son Nizamuddin got a job as a salesman in an electric shop in Qatar three weeks ago. Two youngest daughters are studying in class 12th.

“For the past four months, we all were under so much stress. We could not repay our debts as there was very little income,” said Bava.


Bava said that everyone in his family was under a lot of stress for the last four months. They could not repay their loans as there was very little income. Around 1 pm on Sunday, when the family was waiting for the buyer of their house. So Bava came out and went to the market and bought four tickets for the Kerala government's Fifty-Fifty lottery.


"I have been buying lotteries for the past four months hoping luck will end my misery,” he said.


The lot was drawn that day at 3 pm and Bava came to know that he hit the jackpot. After deducting the tax from the lottery prize, he will get about 63 lakh rupees.
