Kanchanjunga Express Accident Highlights: The Kanchanjunga Express suffered a massive accident on Monday when it was hit by a goods train from behind. Initial reports indicated that the goods train ran through a signal near Phansidewa, Jalpaiguri. So far reports of at least 5 deaths have come in. Over 100 passengers are feared to have suffered various degrees of injuries.

Two coaches of the Sealdah Kanchanjunga Express were derailed as a result of the collision. One of the coaches was sent flying in the air and then landed on the roof of the goods train. Several bogies of the goods train were also derailed. Police, SDRF, and NDRF have taken over the rescue operation. RPF is also at the site. The engine of the goods train will need to be freed with a gas cutter.

The divisional railway manager (DRM) of North Frontier Railway's Katihar division said unconfirmed reports suggest that a few persons may have been injured in the accident. The two rear compartments were derailed under the impact of the collision from behind by the locomotive of the goods train near Rangapani station, about seven km from North Bengal's New Jalpaiguri station, he said.

Kanchanjungha Express Train Accident: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Expresses Concern  

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, in a post on X, said: “Shocked to learn, just now, about a tragic train accident, in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. While details are awaited, Kanchenjunga Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train. “DM, SP, doctors, ambulances and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery, medical assistance. Action on war-footing initiated.”

West Bengal Train Accident: Ashwini Vaishnaw To Reach Darjeeling

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw will reach Darjeeling later today to take stock of the situation at the accident site. Meanwhile, Railway officials are monitoring the situation at the accident site. Teams of NDRF and Police are present at the spot to carry out rescue operations.

The 13174 Kanchanjunga Express was bound for Sealdah from Agartala when the accident occurred around 9 am, the railway official said. The government has set up a helpdesk at Sealdah railway station for the Kanchenjunga train collision 033-23508794, 033-23833326. Scores of people gathered around the accident site. The train was going from Agartala to Kolkata.

Kanchenjunga Express train accident | Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety North East Frontier Railway, Janak Kumar Garg says, "Investigation is going to be started, an inquiry will start in the afternoon... It is an automatic signal territory and if the signals weren't working, the drivers need to follow a procedure. What mistakes have happened, that will come out of the investigation...All records and authorities that were provided have been sealed..."

Kanchanjunga Express Train Accident LIVE: Govt Railway Police To Start Probe Based On Passenger's Complaint

The Government Railway Police (GRP) will start an independent investigation into the Kanchanjungha Express-goods train collision in West Bengal's Darjeeling District. According to news agency IANS, the probe will be based on a complaint filed by a passenger on the ill-fated train.

It is learnt that the passenger filed a complaint stating that human error led to damage of railway property. The complaint was filed at the GRP Station at New Jalpaiguri on Monday night against some unknown offender. This parallel investigation by the GRP will run side-by-side with the investigation by the office of the Commission of Railway Safety to find the reasons behind the mishap, IANS reported, citing sources.

That investigation will be carried out under the direct supervision of the Chief Commission of Railway Safety (CCRS) of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), Janak Kumar Garg.

Kanchanjunga Express Accident LIVE: Passengers Ordeal End As Train Reaches Sealdah

The ordeal of the passengers of the ill-fated Kanchanjunga Express, which was hit by a goods train near New Jalpaiguri leaving nine people dead and several others injured, ended early Tuesday morning when the undamaged coaches of the train reached its destination Sealdah station, an Eastern Railway official said, as reported by news agency PTI.

At least four coaches in the rear of the train were severely damaged in the collision at Rangapani, about 10 kilometres from New Jalpaiguri station, on a rain-soaked Monday morning in north Bengal.

Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim, West Bengal Transport minister Snehasis Chakraborty and Divisional Railway Manager of Sealdah division Deepak Nigam were present at the station to ensure smooth dispersal of the passengers and onward movement to their homes, an official said.
