JU Student Death: 3 More Arrested, BJP Demands Action Taken Report From Bengal Edu Min — Updates

JU Student Death: Three more persons were arrested in connection with the case. BJP's Suvendu Adhikari said the party will demand that Education Minister Bratya Basu table an action taken report in the assembly.

Kolkata Police police on Friday arrested three more persons in the Jadavpur University student death case, as per news agency ANI. This development comes as Jadavpur University (JU) sent an exhaustive report to the University Grants Commission (UGC) on multiple questions raised about the alleged ragging and sexual harassment of a 17-year-old undergraduate student that led to his death, as asked by the statutory body. Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari met the family of the 17-year-old boy in Nadia district and said the party will demand that Education Minister Bratya Basu table an action taken report on the incident in the assembly.

Jadavpur University Student Death Case Updates

  • Three more arrested in Jadavpur student death case, ANI reported Kolkata Police as informing.
  • Registrar Snehamanju Basu told news agency PTI that the university has sent a detailed compliance report answering queries over alleged ragging and sexual harassment of the fresher backed by documentary evidence before the deadline of 12 am on Thursday. "Proactive steps being taken by the university to curb the evil of ragging were extensively elaborated in our report, as sought by UGC. They have acknowledged having received the same," Basu said, as quoted by PTI.

  • Another action taken report will be sent to the UGC soon and made known to the public, he informed, as per PTI's report.

  • Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition in Bengal, along with other party MLAs met the family of the 17-year-old boy in Nadia district. “We are with the family and will help them in whichever way they want. What has happened is unfortunate, but the state administration cannot escape responsibility,” Adhikari said, as quoted by PTI.
  • Earlier in the day, Adhikari lodged a police complaint alleging a premeditated attack on him by the ultra-Left outfit after a scuffle between activists of ultra-left Revolutionary Students Federation (RSF) and BJP's Yuva Morcha the previous day at the BJYM demonstration near JU gate.

"The anti-national forces need to be ousted from the JU campus. This anarchy cannot be tolerated. What has happened is completely anarchic and unacceptable. Next week when the assembly session resumes, we will force Education Minister Bratya Basu to table the action taken report in the assembly,” the BJP leader said, as quoted by PTI.

  • News agency IANS reported Kolkata police sources as saying that almost all apprehended students are trying to confuse the investigators by making contradictory statements from time to time and even some of them are pointing fingers towards others in the process.

As per an IANS report, Police have also recovered two diaries from the room of the hostel where the deceased fresher was staying.

The deceased, a first-year undergraduate student of Bengali Honours, was a resident of Bagula in Nadia district. Nine former and current students of JU were previously remanded to police custody for allegedly ragging and sexually harassing the teenager leading to his death after falling from a second-floor balcony of the main hostel building on August 9. The victim died while undergoing treatment at a hospital the next day.
