Jharkhand: Class 12 Girl Set Ablaze In Dumka For 'Turning Down Proposal' Dies, Accused Arrested

In the Dumka region of Jharkhand, a girl who was reportedly set on fire by someone after she rejected his proposal died on Sunday from her burn wounds. The accused, according to the police, was taken into custody on August 23, news agency ANI reported.
The girl was taken to cremation ground for her last rites earlier today.
Accused Shahrukh had doused her in gasoline and set her ablaze. She was set on fire as a result of unrequited love.
Ankita Kumari, a class 12 girl, was initially taken to Phulo Jhano Medical College and Hospital in Dumka in severe condition. She was thereafter referred to Ranchi's Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) for further treatment.
People were observed demonstrating in the streets of Dumka shortly after the event was made public.

Speaking to ANI, Dumka Superintendent of police (SP) Ambar Lakda said, “The accused Shahrukh has been arrested. We will apply at fast track court for a fast trial. People are cooperating with us. We appeal to people to maintain peace. The situation is under control and Section 144 has been imposed.”

In response to the incident, Jharkhand Health Minister Banna Gupta stated that strict action will be taken against criminals to ensure a speedy trial.
“The state government is serious regarding the murder of a girl in Dumka. Stringent action will be taken against perpetrators. We will ensure a fast trial. We have talked to DC in this regard,” Gupta was quoted by ANI in its report.
