Jammu-Kashmir: 2 Terrorists Killed In Baramulla Encounter As Police & Army's Joint Op Underway

Jammu and Kashmir: Two terrorists were killed and two security personnel were injured in an encounter in the Baramulla district. The encounter started during a cordon and search operation.

In a fierce encounter that erupted in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district on Wednesday, two terrorists are believed to have been killed while two security personnel sustained injuries. Two terrorists "eliminated" in the ongoing Hadipora-Baramulla encounter, the Indian Army's Chinar Corps informed on X. The operation commenced in the Watergam area of Baramulla district early Wednesday morning, following intelligence inputs regarding the presence of militants. Security forces launched a cordon and search operation, which escalated into an encounter when the terrorists opened fire on the troops.

"A cordon and search operation was launched in the Watergam area of Baramulla district this morning based on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists," a senior police official stated, as per news agency PTI. "The operation turned into an encounter when the terrorists started firing on our forces."

The gunbattle led to injuries to two security personnel – a police constable and an army jawan, according to PTI. The official added, "Two bodies have been seen at the scene of the gunbattle, but they have not been retrieved yet."

Category 'A' Terrorist Killed In Bandipora Encounter This Week

This incident follows an encounter in Bandipora district earlier in the week. On Monday, one terrorist was killed in a gunfight in the Aragam area after security forces launched a cordon and search operation based on intelligence inputs.

The Chinar Corps of the Indian Army, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), confirmed the operation, stating, "Based on specific intelligence input regarding presence of terrorists, a joint operation was launched by the Indian Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police on the intervening night of June 16-17 in the general area of Gurihajin, Aragam Bandipora; one terrorist eliminated, operation in progress."

The terrorist killed in the encounter in Bandipora district on Monday was identified as Umar Lone, a category 'A' terrorist of the Lashkar-e-Taiba outfit who was active since 2018, commandant 3 Sector RR, Brigadier Vipul Tyagi, confirmed on Tuesday, as per PTI.

Terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir are classified as A, B, or C  based on on their involvement in militancy activities.

"Lone was involved in numerous terrorist-related activities such as recruitment, illegal killings and the expansion of over ground worker (OGW) network," the Army officer said. His elimination was seen as a significant achievement for the forces.
