Srinagar: In a major success for the security forces, three militants have been killed in a joint operation by the security forces at Batamaloo area of Srinagar, less than a kilometer away from the police headquarters in Srinagar. A woman and two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, including an officer were injured in the encounter in Firdousabad locality of Batamaloo area of Srinagar. IGP Vijay Kumar said that three militants have been killed in a gunfight in Batamaloo adding that a woman died in the crossfire during the initial contact, in which two CRPF personnel including Deputy Commandant were injured.

The woman has been identified as Kousar Reyaz (45) while as two CRPF paramilitary troopers including Deputy Commandant of 117 battalion sustained injuries. They were shifted to army hospital for treatment, where their condition is stated to be stable.

Identity of the militants is being ascertained, however sources say that the killed militants are all local, and are affiliated with Hizbul Mujahideen.

Earlier, police sources said that the operation was launched at about 02.30 am in the night by forces including CRPF and Police in the Firdousabad locality following specific inputs about the presence of militants in the area.


As soon as forces zeroed towards the suspected spot the hiding militants fired upon them which was retaliated, leading to an encounter.

After Nawakadal, Zoonimar and Malabagh this is the 4th encounter of 2020 and the first civilian casualty in an encounter in Srinagar was after a long time. In 2020 this year 5 forces personnel have also been killed in 3 militant attacks in Srinagar.
