Terrorists opened fire upon a police officer named Mohammad Hafiz Chad in the Hamdaniya colony of Bemina on Saturday, news agency ANI reported citing the Kashmir Zone Police. The injured officer was transported to the hospital for treatment. Kashmir Zone Police have cordoned off the affected area in response to the security threat.
Hafiz is originally from Karnah in the Kupwara district of north Kashmir, but now resides in Bemina, according to the news agency PTI.
The terrorist attack in Srinagar occurred a day after Jammu and Kashmir Police Inspector Masroor Ahmad Wani's colleagues and family members said their final goodbyes to him at a wreath-laying ceremony in the city.
Wani was shot by a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist in Srinagar in October while playing cricket. He died on Thursday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.
Close range shots were fired into Wani's eye, abdomen, and neck by the terrorist. His wife, who is expecting her first child, survives him.
