As many as 13 soldiers belonged to the Bihar Regiment, with twelve of them from 16 Bihar Battalion including including Colonel B Santosh Babu, and one from 12 Bihar Battalion. Three of the martyrs were soldiers From Punjab Regiment. Two belonged to Medium Regiment while one each from Field Regiment and MBSC. Tensions between India and China started building up since April end over India's construction activities in Eastern Ladakh. The Galwan Valley face-off was preceded by a number of skirmishes between the two sides along the LAC in the month of May.
China has claimed sovereignty of the Galwan Valley region, and has falsely accused India of violating border protocols. However India has already clarified that Chinese troops attempted to unilaterally change the status quo, even when military and diplomatic talks were on between the countries.
