Weather Update: The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its latest bulletin on Thursday, predicted moderate to heavy rainfall in several parts of India. The Met Department issued a heavy rain warning in parts of south India, including Tamil Nadu and Kerala. A rain warning has also been issued for states including Delhi, Kerala, Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and parts of Uttar Pradesh.


As rain lashed Delhi on Thursday, the IMD issued a yellow alert signalling heavy showers in the city on Friday. The national capital received light rains at several places on Independence Day as the maximum temperature settled at 34 degrees Celsius, which is normal for the season, the weather office said.


In Northwest India, the Met Department has predicted a heavy rainfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad and West Rajasthan till Saturday. According to the weather office, showers are likely in Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, and Himachal Pradesh till August 21. Besides Delhi, the IMD has also issued a yellow alert warning for Haryana and Chandigarh for Friday.


As far as West and Central India are concerned, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely in parts of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh during the week. Moving towards the east and northeast region, the weather office has said that several states, including West Bengal, Sikkim, Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, and Meghalaya, are likely to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall.


In South India, the IMD said that heavy and very heavy dowpour is expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Kerala in the next few days.


Meanwhile, on Thursday, heavy rains continued to lash several parts of Kerala. The IMD issued an orange alert for two districts of the state. The Met Department sounded orange alerts in Kozhikode and Wayanad districts of the state, for the day. It stated that due to a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Arabian Sea and South Kerala coast, the state would receive heavy rainfall between August 15 to 19.


The IMD also issued yellow alerts in the remaining 12 districts of Kerala for the day. An orange alert means very heavy rain (6 cm to 20 cm), and a yellow alert means heavy rainfall between 6 to 11 cm. The weather Department also issued an orange alert in Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts for Friday. It warned against going fishing in the Kerala - Lakshadweep - Karnataka coastal region from August 15 to 19, citing chances of strong winds and bad weather conditions.
