Days after heavy downpours paralysed Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), several areas in the national capital and neighbouring Noida witnessed scattered rainfall on Friday despite an all-green forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). Green is the colour when there is no forecast for any heavy rainfall.
In its latest forecast, IMD issued no rainfall warning for Delhi, apart from the east Delhi district, where a yellow alert was issued suggesting a possibility of moderate rainfall.
As per several videos shared by Delhi residents on social media, parts of the East Delhi district received heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms. Noida's Sector 16 also received light showers.
On Friday, Delhi experienced a slightly cooler morning, with the minimum temperature recorded at 26.5 degrees Celsius, one degree below the average for this time of year. As per the Met Department's latest forecast, Delhi and its neighbouring areas may experience a cloudy sky accompanied by light rain and thunderstorms during the day. The relative humidity in the city was measured at 88 per cent.
Between Wednesday and Thursday morning, IMD recorded 147mm of rain in eastern parts of Delhi and its suburbs, breaking a 14-year record for the highest single-day total in July. As per the official data, the national capital received more than half its monthly rainfall on Wednesday, which damaged infrastructure in northern India as widespread waterlogging of drains led to flash floods.
On Wednesday, as many as 10 flights headed to Delhi were diverted after heavy rain lashed Delhi-NCR in the evening. Many airlines, including IndiGo, Air India, Vistara, and SpiceJet, had issued advisories about flight diversions and asked passengers to leave for airports early and keep checking the status of their flights.
