India's first dual Elevated Cross Taxiway (ECT) and fourth runway at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) will be inaugurated on July 13 by Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. According to news agency ANI, Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) stated that the 2.1 km long and 202 metre-wide ECT will connect northern and southern airfields with the eastern saving atleast 7 to 20 minutes of the passengers' time, though this depends on factors like aircraft landing etc. The main purpose of the Elevated Cross Taxiway is to reduce taxiing distance for aircrafts, and save natural resources, also, enhance operational efficiency.
The taxiway will also optimise aircrafts operations and reduce upto 55,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year. "It will help to achieve a "Net Zero Carbon Emission Airport" by 2030". Prabhakara Rao, deputy MD of GMR Group, said, "it is a testimonial to DIAL's commitment to creating environmentally sustainable architecture and becoming a 'Net Zero Carbon Emission Airport' by 2030."

The ECT will also enhance passenger experience and will cut short the duration travellers will have to stay in a plane after landing and take-off. The distance that an aircraft needs to cover, after landing on the third runway and going to T1, will be reduced to 2 kms from the present 9 kms.
The dual-lane elevated Code F taxiways are capable of handling large aircraft and wide-body jets such as A380, 8777, and B747-8. It allows safe and simulteneous passage of two big aircrafts. The ECT is being constructed as a part of expansion works in IGI Airport which is also getting a new runway other new works include a bigger and integrated Terminal 1, a newly expanded T1 apron for aircraft parking, several new taxiways, and landside developments alongside a host of technological enhancements. It is expected to enhance airport operations.
