Jaipur: Amid the ongoing political tussle in the Congress’ Punjab unit, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Sunday advised Captain Amarinder Singh to listen to his “inner voice” and keep the party’s interests in forefront.

Gehlot said he hopes that Captain Amarinder Singh will not take any such step, which will harm the party.

“I hope that Capt. Amarinder Singh ji won't take any step that could cause damage to the Congress party. Capt. Sahib himself has said that the party made him CM and allowed him to continue as CM for nine and a half years,” he said in a statement posted on Twitter.

Gehlot said Captain Amarinder Singh has served the people of Punjab by working to the best of his capacity.

The Rajasthan Chief Minister said the high command sometimes has to take decisions in the interest of the party on the basis of feedback from the MLAs and common people.

“I personally believe that the Congress president chooses the chief minister at the risk of inviting displeasure of several leaders who are in the race for chief ministership. However, when the same CM is changed, he/she is displeased and holds the decision wrong,” Gehlot said.

“One should listen to one’s inner voice in such moments. I think it should be a matter of concern for all the countrymen as to what direction the country is heading towards due to fascist forces,” said Gehlot.

“Therefore, the responsibility of all of Congressmen increases at such times in the interest of the country. One must rise above oneself and think in the interest of the party and the country,” he added.

The Rajasthan Chief Minister further said he hopes “the respected leader” Captain Amarinder Singh will continue to work in the future also keeping the party’s interests in the forefront.

Captain Amarinder Singh tendered his resignation as the chief minister earlier on Saturday following months of infighting between him and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Singh, who resigned months before the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, said that he would decide his future political course of action in consultation with his supporters who have stood by him for over five decades.
