Heatwave In Delhi: Court Adjourns Case Till Winters, Flags Lack Of Water, AC Or Cooler

A consumer court in Delhi on May 21 adjourned a case to November citing difficulty in hearing the arguments during the summer time due to lack of air conditioner or cooler in the courtroom.

A consumer court in Delhi on May 21 adjourned a case to November citing difficulty in hearing the arguments during the summer time due to lack of air conditioner or cooler in the courtroom. The consumer forum also flagged no supply of water in washrooms in court premises.

President Suresh Kumar Gupta and corum members Harshali Kaur and Ramesh Chand Yadav passed an order stating that since the temperature is more than 40 degrees celsius it is difficult to hear the matter at hand.

"There is neither Air Conditioner nor Cooler in the Court Room. Temperature is more than 40 Degree Celsius. There is too much heat in the Courtroom which led to sweating as such it is difficult to hear arguments," the order dated May 21 read.

The consumer forum adjourned the matter to November 21, a time when Delhi experiences winter season. The court said that it cannot hear the arguments of the parties, in such conditions.

The consumer court further directed that a copy of the said order be sent to the Secretary-Cum-Commissioner for information.

Lack of judicial infrastructure in the country has especially plagued the lower courts since a very long time and has hindered the process of justice delivery in the country.

It may be recalled that the Supreme Court in 2021 initiated suo motu proceedings over reported inaction on part of the government in appointing members to the consumer courts and providing adequate infrastructure for them.

The matter is still ongoing in the top court and it has in fact issued several directions from time to time to Centre and State governments to expeditiously fill up vacancies in consumer courts across the country and improve infrastructure for these courts that obstruct smooth delivery of justice in the country.
