A infant was mauled to death by stray dogs on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday after they entered in a private hospital in Haryana's Panipat and took away the baby sleeping next to her grandmother. According to reports, the Police sent the body for an autopsy to the local civil hospital and started investigations. The dog reportedly mauled the newborn after dragging him out of the hospital.

Haryana Police took cognisance of the incident and said that the two-day-old boy was sleeping next to his grandmother on the floor. They said that no one noticed the dog entering the hospital, news agency PTI reported.

The baby's family hails from Uttar Pradesh. His mother had come to Panipat for delivery.

"The dog entered the hospital, picked up the newborn sleeping on the floor with his grandmother with his mouth and took him out," PTI quoted Station House Officer (SHO), Sector 13-17 police station, Inspector Vijay Kumar as saying.

After not finding the baby around, relatives raised an alarm and it was found that the dog had taken him out and bit him, the SHO informed. The baby was later declared dead by doctors.

After finding child in the dog's mouth, the family members managed to rescue the infant from the animal and then rushed him inside the hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

Police also informed that CCTV footage of the hospital showed the dog grabbing the newborn and taking him out.

The anguished family questioned the hospital's security and management and sought answer as to how stray dogs were freely roaming inside the building.
