Farmers' Protests: A day after President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the contentious agrarian bills, farmers staged a massive protest against the new reforms in New Delhi. The protests took an aggressive turn when a tractor was set ablaze near India Gate in the heart of the national capital. Youth Congress has been accused of perpetrating the act.

Five people have been arrested in connection with the reported arson near India Gate.

In Karnataka as well, JD(S) workers took out a bike rally in Shivamogga today, but were stopped by Police at Lakshmi Theater circle. Farmers' organisations have called a statewide bandh against Farm Bills (now laws), land reform ordinances, amendments to APMC and labour laws.

The controversial farm laws have triggered widespread protests across country, especially in the agriculture dependent states of Punjab and Haryana, where the protesters view the legislations as exploitative for farmers.

Amid raging protests, President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday gave his approval to all the three Farm Bills - Farmer's Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020.

Several farmers' unions earlier this week called for a 'Bharat Bandh' (nationwide shutdown). Associations including Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), All India Farmers Union (AIFU), All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC), All India Kisan Mahasangh called for the strike which has been support by several Opposition parties, including Congress, which has termed the bills as 'anti-farmer' and 'anti-poor'.
