Earthquake of magnitude 6 strikes Nicobar Islands region
Nicobar Earthquake: There were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property, officials said.
New Delhi: A strong earthquake of magnitude 6 shook the seismologically prone Andaman and Nicobar Islands Thursday, National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said.
The earthquake hit the region at around 8: 30 am and its epicentre was Nicobar Islands region.
There was no tsunami alert issued as sea levels around the Andaman Nicobar archipelago showed no major rise, said SPS Shenoi, Director INCOIS.
As per India Meteorological Department an earthquake of Magnitude 6 occurred at 08:23:07 IST, Latitude 7.6 N and Longitude 94.5 E.
The quake occurred at a depth 84 Km, IMD said. There were no immediate reports of loss of life or damage to property, officials said.
Andaman and Nicobar is an Integrated Services Command.

Recently, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman visited Nicobar on a two day visit where she watched a joint amphibious exercise on Monday, participated by the three armed forces, off the Campbell Bay coast, the southernmost island of the nation. She also reviewed the operational readiness of the command.
