The Tibetan community in North Delhi on Friday staged a protest against the Chinese government near Majnu Ka Tilla even as foreign leaders began arriving in the city for the G20 Summit. However, they were quickly dispersed, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi. He said the protest was organised by the Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) and the protestors were asked to disperse within half an hour of their agitation. Speaking to news agency ANI, he said, “They protested for half an hour and then we requested them to disperse. Authorities had earlier tightened the security in the region.
The protests were being carried out over China’s “illegal occupation of Tibet”. People participating in the protests raised slogans like ‘G20 Talk Tibet’, ‘Tibet Matters’, and ‘China’s diplomatic assurances not to be trusted’.
Around 200 Tibetans gathered in the Majnu Ka Tilla area around 11.30 AM and went on to protest until noon when they were finally dispersed by the police.
Kalsi was quoted as saying by news agency PTI: "We have barricaded a certain part of Majnu ka Tilla. Delhi Police and paramilitary forces have been deployed to maintain law and order.”
Meanwhile, security was beefed up across the city ahead of the G20 summit. More than 50,000 security personnel are helping Delhi Police strengthen the security arrangements.
