The incessant rain in northern India has caused widespread devastation and loss of lives in Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, and Punjab. Parts of Uttar Pradesh have also been affected by the heavy downpour.

The floods and rain have also hit road and rail traffic in various regions while several areas faced power outages and water shortages. The downpour has stopped in Delhi. However, the risk of floods has still not abated as the Yamuna is still swelling due to the large volumes of water being released from Haryana.

Here are the latest developments on the flood situation in north India:

DELHI FLOODS

Several areas of Delhi remain submerged as the Yamuna floodwaters are yet to recede. At 1 pm on Thursday, the level of the water in the swelling Yamuna was recorded at 208.62 metres.

The increasing water level has resulted in the floodwaters entering the Sushruta Trauma Centre. As many as 40 patients admitted to the hospital, including three on ventilators, were shifted to LNJP Hospital.

In the wake of the increased danger, the Delhi government has ordered schools, colleges and universities to remain closed till Sunday. All government offices, except those providing essential services, will have to work from home. Advisory is being issued for private offices, too, to facilitate work from home. Moreover, Kejriwal advised to ration water in homes as three Water Treatment Plants are shut and people will face a water crisis for a day or two.

The government has also banned the entry of heavy goods vehicles via the Singhu, Badarpur, Loni, and Chilla borders. Interstate buses from Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Uttarakhand destined for ISBT Kashmere Gate will now terminate at the Singhu border.

The area around the Red Fort was also submerged with visuals showing people wading through knee-deep water.

HARYANA FLOODS

As many as 240 villages have been affected by the continuous downpour. Haryana has so far recorded 11 deaths due to rains and floods. The Manohar Lal Khattar government has announced compensation for the next of kin of victims of floods and rain.

The Centre has allocated Rs 216 crore for flood relief and rehabilitation operations in Haryana, according to The Indian Express.
