A total of 17 pilots of Air India, IndiGo and Vistara died due to COVID-19 in May when the country witnessed the peak of the coronavirus pandemic's second wave. IndiGo lost 10 pilots and Vistara two, aviation industry sources stated.

Bengal Reports 108 More Covid Deaths, 8,811 Fresh Cases

West Bengal's Covid-19 death toll rose to 15,921 after 108 more people succumbed to the disease on Thursday, the state health department said in a bulletin. The tally went up to 14,03,535 after 8,811 new cases of infection were reported, it added.

Gujarat Records 1,207 New Coronavirus Cases; 3,018 Recoveries

Gujarat recorded 1,207 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the tally of cases to 8,13,270, the state health department said on Thursday evening.


The death toll reached 9,890 after 17 more patients succumbed to the infection, including four in Ahmedabad and three in Surat district.

Maharashtra Records 15, 229 New Cases, 307 Deaths In Last 24 Hours

Maharashtra has recorded as many as 15,229 new cases of Coronavirus infections 307 deaths and 25,617 recoveries in the last 24 hours. The overall recovery rate in the state is 94.73 per cent and there are 2,04,974 active cases at the moment.

India will be able to achieve vaccination for all by December. If we vaccinate people in three shifts each day, then, we can vaccinate 1 crore people in a day. This is definitely ambitious, but not impossible.

Mumbai's Dharavi Reports One New COVID-19 Case

For the first time in four months, Mumbai's Dharavi area reported just one new coronavirus case on Thursday, a senior official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said. The slum-dominated area had not detected a single case on Wednesday.


The tally of infections in Dharavi stands at 6,829, of which 6,451 patients have recovered from the disease and 19 are undergoing treatment.

Mumbai likely to get 87,000 Covishield doses on June 4: Mayor

Mumbai is expected to get a supply of 87,000 doses of Covishield vaccine against COVID-19 on Friday and the inoculation drive would resume in the city the next day, Mayor Kishori Pednekar said on Thursday.

Due to the unavailability of enough number of vaccine doses, the COVID-19 vaccination drive in Mumbai was suspended on Thursday at centres run by the city civic body and the Maharashtra government, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) earlier said.

Of the total 342 active COVID-19 vaccination centres in Mumbai, 243 are managed by the BMC and 20 by the state government.

Talking to reporters here, Pednekar said they are expecting a supply of 87,000 doses of the Covishield vaccine on Friday, following which the vaccination drive would resume the next day.

She also said they will try to administer both the doses of vaccine to students who are set to go abroad for higher studies by August.

The BMC is not going to purchase COVID-19 vaccines from any agents, she said.

Coronavirus: India Reports 1,34,154 New COVID-19 Cases, 2,887 Deaths In Last 24 Hours

India's total tally of COVID-19 cases surged to 2,84,41,986 with 1,34,154 new infections being reported in a day, while the recoveries have crossed 2.63 crores, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday. The death count increased to 3,37,989 with 2,887 new fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

Sri Lanka extends nationwide travel restriction to prevent spread of COVID-19
Sri Lankan authorities said on Wednesday the ongoing nationwide travel restriction had been extended to June 14 as health officials looked to stop the rapid spread of the COVID-19 virus.

 

Sri Lanka's Army Commander and Head of the National Operations Center for the Prevention of COVID-19, General Shavendra Silva told Xinhua that the nationwide travel restriction was extended under the instructions of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and it would not be relaxed anytime in between.

SII seeks indemnity protection

India has been holding approval of the Pfizer vaccine over indemnity protection. 


According to a government source, "If something happens, a patient dies, we will not be able to question them (Pfizer). If somebody challenges in a court of law, the central government will be responsible for everything, not the company."

Jamia Millia Islamia to conduct online open book exams for current semester

The Jamia Millia Islamia will be conducting open book exams online for the ongoing semester in the next few days amid Covid scare, the central university said on Wednesday.

A mock examination shall also be conducted by the university to provide orientation to students for the open book examination in the current even semester, it added.

The varsity said one hour of mock examination is compulsory for every student and only after the successful completion of the test, they will be allowed to take the actual exam.

"The Office of the Controller of Examination has created a dedicated help desk number and an email-ID to address the issue of the students during the online mock examinations which will remain operative from 10 am to 7 pm on each day of examination till the examinations are over," it said.

Bengal reports 8,923 new COVID-19 cases, 135 more deaths

 West Bengal's COVID-19 cases continued to decline as the state reported 8,923 new infections on Wednesday, the Health Department said.

In the last 24 hours, 135 people died of the disease in the state, it said.

The state has so far reported 13,94,724 cases and 15,813 deaths.

Of the latest fatalities, 43 were reported from North 24 Parganas, and 38 from Kolkata.

North 24 Parganas also reported the highest number of cases at 1,860, followed by Kolkata at 1,040, the bulletin said.

In all, 17,386 people recovered during the day, improving the discharge rate to 93.85 per cent. So far, the state has witnessed 13,08,896 recoveries.

There are 70,015 active cases in the state at present.

Foundation raised USD1.2 million for COVID efforts in India

US-India Chambers of Commerce Foundation has raised more than USD1.2 million for coronavirus-related efforts in India.

With a record-breaking fundraising, US-India Chambers of Commerce Foundation has shipped or en route nearly 120 ventilators and over 1,000 oxygen concentrators, a release said on Wednesday.

United Airlines is one of the logistics providers who has been partnering with the foundation to help get this needed medical equipment in country as quickly as possible.

Some of the equipment has already reached hospitals in India and already being used, the release said.

Recipients have been Indian Red Cross, along with no-governmental and government hospitals in Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Jharkhand, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Tamil Nadu.

All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Patna has started the paediatric trials for the Covid-19 vaccine- Covaxin, manufactured by Bharat Biotech. The EU has delayed putting the UK on a ‘white list’ of countries from where non-essential travel is approved amid concerns of rise in cases linked to the Delta variant.


Covaxin received the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) nod to conduct clinical trials in children on May 11. “Covaxin has been approved by the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI), for Phase II/III clinical trials in the age group of 2 to 18 years.”
