Corona Figures Explained: India Crosses 9 Lakh Cases; How The Country Paced To The Grim Milestone?

Coronavirus In India:  As the world is racing to find a vaccine to put an end to the deadly pandemic, the situation in India continues to remain grim with the total number of Covid-19 cases breaching the 9 lakh-mark.  According to the latest health ministry data, 28,498 new cases have emerged while 553 deaths are reported in the last 24 hours. It takes the tally of positive cases to 9,06,752 including 3,11,565 active cases, 5,71,460 cured/discharged/migrated and 23,727 deaths. The recoveries/deaths ratio is 96.01 per cent : 3.99 per cent now, as per the government data. This is the fifth consecutive day that Covid-19 cases have increased by more than 26,000. Maharashtra has witnessed 6,497 new cases in the past 24 hours, while Delhi has added 1,246 cases to its tally.

The health ministry said that more than 70 per cent of the deaths are as a result of comorbidities. How figures reached 9 lakh in India?
  • The country has reported its first Covid-19 case in January. After that the figure of 1 lakh was breached on 19 May, 2020 in a span of 111 days followed by a total number of 2 lakh cases on 19 May, 2020 within  15 days.
  • Later on 13 June, 2020 it touched the grim 3 lakh figures within a span of 10 days, and then 4 lakh on 21 June, within eight days.
  • Slowly, the numbers kept on spiraling to touch 5 lakh on 27 June , 2020 in a span of six day.
  • On 2 July the tally touched 6 lakh within a span of five days.
Global figures: Globally, more than 1.3 crore cases are reported and 5.7 lakh​ people have died, according to a figures of Johns Hopkins University. The United States has been grappling with the worst coronavirus outbreak in the world as Florida recorded the largest single-day spike in new confirmed cases. The World Health Organization warned that the pandemic is worsening globally and that “there will be no return to the old normal for the foreseeable future." As per the Worldometer, the United States remains the most affected with over 65,000 cases in a day.  The US has a total 3,479,483 cases and reported 138,247 deaths. Brazil has 1,887,959 cases, and 72,921 deaths, while India is the third-worst-hit with 907,645 cases and 23,727 deaths. The WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said while numerous countries have now brought their previously explosive outbreaks under control, namely those in Europe and Asia, “too many countries are headed in the wrong direction." In fact, earlier this month Prime Minister Narendra Modi has assured all that more and more number of people are recovering from the disease.
