New Delhi: Citing data, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has accused the Central government of a failed lockdown on Twitter. His comments come at a time when the government is gradually lifting the lockdown despite rising numbers of coronavirus cases in the country.
Gandhi attached graphs to his tweet which shows a compares India’s decision to ‘Unlock’ with other countries such as Germany, Spain, Italy, and the UK. The graphs which are based on data from media reports, Oxford University, and All India Congress Committee (AICC) show a steady increase in coronavirus cases since the lockdown began. But unlike the other countries, there is no downward curve in the cases after the unlock was announced.
For example, in the graph of both Spain and Germany, there is a marked difference in the number of coronavirus cases before and after the lockdown. In both, the countries unlock was announced after the daily cases had reduced to 1000-2000. Similarly, Italy also shows that their lockdown was lifted after they had surpassed the peak of the infection, and cases were gradually reducing. The graph shows that country had decided to unlock after daily cases had come down to over 3000 cases.
This is a contrast to India, where Unlock was announced when daily cases were over 8000 and subsequently an increase was seen in the number of cases.
India recorded a huge spike in coronavirus cases on Friday and as many as 9,851 new cases of Coronavirus (Covid-19) were registered in 24 hours. It broke the previous day's record of the highest cases in a day. 273 people also died in the same duration. At present, the total coronavirus cases in India are 236,184 and it stands in the sixth position globally in the list of countries worst affected by the virus.
