Senior Congress leader and former Kerala Chief Minister A K Antony’s son, Anil K Antony, on Wednesday resigned from the Congress party a day after making comments opposing the BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi -- India: The Modi Question.

“I have resigned from my roles in @incindia @INCKerala. Intolerant calls to retract a tweet, by those fighting for free speech. I refused. @facebook wall of  hate/abuses by ones supporting a trek to promote love! Hypocrisy thy name is! Life goes on. Redacted resignation letter below,” he tweeted.

"A lot of things that happened in the last 24 hours, especially from certain corners of Congress have hurt me a lot. After my tweet, I was getting threat calls and hate messages all through the night," Anil told ANI.

"From where I come from, I don't think that these are the people I should be working with. It is very disappointing to see where it has reached," he added.

Taking a stand against BBC's documentary, Anil on Tuesday said that placing the views of the British broadcaster over Indian institutions would "undermine" the country's sovereignty.

The Congress leader said he was facing "intolerant calls" to retract his tweet on BBC's documentary.

"Considering the events from yesterday, I believe it would be appropriate for me to leave all my roles in the Congress," Anil wrote in his resignation letter.

He gave up his duty both as the convener of the KPCC digital media and also as the national coordinator of the Congress social media and digital communication cell.

"I am sure that I have my own unique strengths which could have enabled me to contribute very effectively to the party in several ways. However, by now I have been made well aware that you, your colleagues and the coterie around the leadership are only keen to work with a bunch of sycophants and chamchas, who would unquestionably be at your beck and call. This has become the lone criterion of merit. Sadly, we don't have much common ground," his letter read.
