Chidambaram Targets Modi Over Skipping Parliament Attack Tribute Event For Varanasi Visit

Criticising Prime Minister Modi on Varanasi visit, P Chidambaram said, "PM has such great respect for Parliament that he will skip the December 13 homage to martyred security staff"

New Delhi: Former Union Minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram launched a scathing attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi by pointing out that the PM skipped the Parliament event paying homage to those who were killed in the 2001 attack and instead went to Varanasi.

"PM has such great respect for Parliament that he will skip the December 13 homage to martyred security staff. He will skip everything and go to Varanasi. You will only find him in places like Varanasi and Ayodhya, not in the Parliament," Chidambaram said, according to the news agency ANI.

Ahead of crucial assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, PM Modi visited his parliamentary constituency Varanasi. On his two-day landmark visit, Modi inaugurated phase 1 of the newly-constructed Kashi Vishwanath Dham on Monday and attended a conclave of chief ministers from BJP-ruled states on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought details on the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Srinagar which led to the death of two policemen and injuries to 12 of their colleagues, his office tweeted on Monday.

"PM @narendramodi has sought details on the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. He has also expressed condolences to the families of those security personnel who have been martyred in the attack,” the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) tweeted.

On December 13, 2001, five heavily-armed terrorists belonging to terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), went inside the Parliament complex in New Delhi and opened fire indiscriminately.

Around 14 people, including security personnel and one civilian, were killed in the attack. The terror strike took place around 40 minutes after Parliament was adjourned and about 100 members were present in the building.
