New Delhi: Senior Congress party leader P Chidambaram took a dig at Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Friday after a local court questioned the police for lodging a "false FIR" against Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani, reported news agency PTI.

Chidambaram asked the Assam CM whether he will order an inquiry to find out who was the "insane person" to register "false" FIR against Mevani as observed by the court.

“Will the CM of Assam entrust the case to the CBI to find out who was the insane person who caused the FIR to be registered against Mr Mevani?” Chidambaram said in a Tweet.

While hearing the bail petition of Mevani, the Barpeta District and Sessions Judge Aparesh Chakraborty urged the High Court to direct police to bring about changes in its working style, as the Judge highlighted the encounters carried out by the police in the last one year.

Reacting to the development, Chidambaram said that the court observed that there was no intention to outrage the modesty of a lady police officer by Mevani, that too in the presence of two male police officers and held the FIR had no merit.

“If Mr Mevani was not insane and yet a false FIR was registered against him, there must be someone who was insane?” Chidambaram Tweeted.

Assam police had arrested Jignesh Mevani on Monday after allegation were leveled against him for misbehaving with a female Police officer.

The alleged incident took place when the female Police officer was escorting Mevani from Guwahati airport to Kokrajhar along with Additional Superintendent of Police Surjeet Singh Panesar and another official in a government vehicle on April 21.
