New Delhi: Mukhwinder Singh Chinna has been appointed as the new Inspector General of Patiala, while Deepak Parik has been appointed as the new Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of the city.
Wazir Singh has been appointed as the new Superintendent of Police of Patiala, ANI reported.
The Punjab government had earlier transferred Rakesh Agrawal, Nanak Singh and Harpal Singh, who were posted as the IG, SSP and SP of Patiala, with immediate effect post the violence in the city.
The outgoing IG said “this is a government order”.
“We are here in Patiala to maintain law and order,” added Agrawal.
The police have been deployed to the site to control the situation.
Mobile internet and SMS services were suspended in Patiala following clashes between two groups earlier on Friday.
An 11-hour curfew was imposed in Patiala from 7 p.m.
This took place after the police fired several rounds in the air to avert a clash between members of the Shiv Sena, who had called for an “anti-Khalistan” march, and Sikh activists and Nihangs brandishing swords outside the Kali Mata temple.
The officials said this incident also led to stone-pelting by both sides and added that at least four people, including two policemen, were injured in the clash.
The incident was the first major law and order incident in Punjab under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
“The incident of clashes in Patiala are deeply unfortunate. I spoke with the DGP, peace has been restored in the area. We are closely monitoring the situation and will not let anyone create disturbance in the State. Punjab’s peace and harmony is of utmost importance,” Mann tweeted.
