Today is the third day of the four-day Chhath Puja. The third day is main in the Chhath festival. One of the difficult fasts, the Chhath fast, is kept strictly for 36 hours. On the day of Kharna, porridge (kheer) made with jaggery is eaten in the evening and then a strict fast is observed for 36 hours. All preparations for Chhath Puja are made on the day of Kharna.

Kartik Shukla Shashti i.e. today the sun will be given arghya and puja of 'Chhath Maiyya' will be performed. On the 6th day, the male member of the family takes a branch to the ghat and worships the setting sun after the vrati bath. Arghya is given with milk and Ganga jal. The Chhathi Maiyya is worshipped on the ghat itself. The next morning, the rising sun is again given arghya and then the prasad (offering) is distributed. After this women observe the fast.
