New Delhi: The Union Cabinet has finally cleared the much-awaited Civil Aviation Policy at its meeting today morning.

The Civil Aviation Ministry had sent the proposed policy to Cabinet for approval on June 3.

The new policy as proposed by the aviation ministry has been taken in the favour of passengers, as it would include capping of airfares at Rs 2,500 for an hour-long flight.  The same would also benefit the domestic aviation sector by supporting its high growth potential.

Other provisions of the policy include:

  • Providing viability gap funding for airlines to encourage operation on domestic routes

  • Auctioning of unilateral traffic rights

  • Tax incentives for airlines

  • Maintenance and repair works of aircraft besides mooting 2 percent levy on all air tickets to fund regional connectivity scheme
