The Republic Day festivities will now commence on January 23 rather than January 24 in order to accommodate Subhas Chandra Bose's birth anniversary.

"This is in line with Modi Government’s focus on celebrating/commemorating important aspects of our history and culture," said government sources.

Due to the Covid situation in the national capital, around 5,000 people will be allowed to attend the Republic Day parade this year, sources in the defence establishment told PTI on Saturday.

PM Modi began the day by remembering Bal Thackeray the late Shiv Sena supremo on his Jayanti. The PM, on Twitter, wrote, "I pay homage to Shri Balasaheb Thackeray on his Jayanti. He will be remembered forever as an outstanding leader who always stood with the people."

Meanwhile, Congress' list of candidates for Uttarakhand was released on Saturday. "Harak Singh Rawat said that he wanted to serve Congress selflessly & everybody agreed to give him a chance. He will play an important role in strengthening the party," said Congress' Uttarakhand Chief.

In other news, The Election Commission of India on Saturday extended the ban imposed on physical rallies and roadshows till January 31. However, it has announced relaxations pertaining to physical public meetings, video vans, and door-to-door campaigning by political parties.

Captain Amarinder Singh, the founder of the Punjab Lok Congress and former chief minister of Punjab, declared on Saturday that he will run for the Patiala seat in the upcoming Punjab Assembly Election 2022.
