Breaking News LIVE: Sensex Tanks Nearly 700 Pts In Early Trade; Nifty Dips Below 17,600

 Equity benchmark Sensex slumped nearly 700 points in opening trade on Friday, tracking intense selling pressure across the counters amid a negative trend in global markets and sustained foreign fund outflow.

The BSE gauge was trading 690.51 points or 1.16 per cent lower at 58,774.11 in early trade. Likewise, the Nifty fell 194.10 points or 1.09 per cent to 17,562.90.

Bajaj Finserv was the top loser in the Sensex pack, shedding 2.59 per cent, followed by Infosys, Dr Reddy's, Tech Mahindra, Sun Pharma, Wipro and IndusInd Bank.

On the other hand, PowerGrid and HUL were the only gainers.

In the previous session, the 30-share BSE index ended 634.20 points or 1.06 per cent lower at 59,464.62. Similarly, the NSE Nifty plunged 181.40 points or 1.01 per cent to 17,757.

Breaking News LIVE: Delhi Witnesses Foggy Morning

The national capital witnessed a foggy morning on Friday with visibility dropping to 200 metres as the city recorded a minimum temperature of 7.6 degrees Celsius, normal during the season.

According to the India Meteorological Department, the Safdarjung observatory -- considered the official marker for the city - reported moderate fog and visibility at 200 metres.

The city will witness generally cloudy sky with light rain or drizzle on Friday and the maximum temperature is likely to settle around 19 degrees Celsius, the IMD said.

The relative humidity at 8.30 am on Friday was 95 per cent, the weather office said.

Delhi's air quality was reported to be in very poor category on Thursday as the AQI value at 8 am was 382, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data showed.

Prime Minister Modi will be inaugurating a circuit house near the Somnath temple today. The inauguration will be followed by a virtual address by PM Modi. "At 11 AM tomorrow, 21st January would be inaugurating a new Circuit House at Somnath. It is situated near the Temple and will benefit many pilgrims," PM Modi tweeted. 


In other news, the Central Election Committee (CEC) of the Congress will meet on Friday at 4 pm through video conferencing for the selection of candidates for the Uttarakhand assembly polls. Both Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi will be inaugurating the Youth Manifesto of the party today for the upcoming UP Election.


Samajwadi Party (SP) chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav will contest the 2022 Assembly Polls from Karhal constituency in Mainpuri district, the party's national spokesperson Ashutosh Verma said on Thursday.


Notification for the second phase of assembly elections in UP will be issued today, thus nominations can be filed from today. Nominations will be filed till January 28. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be done on January 29 and withdrawal of nominations can be done till January 31. Voting will be held on February 14 for second phase of UP ELections.


Meanwhile, the weather in Delhi is getting foggy.


"There will be partly cloudy sky with possibility of light rain or drizzle towards evening on Friday. There will be shallow fog in the morning," the IMD bulletin said.


Minimum temperatures are also likely to rise by 2-4 degrees Celsius over northwest India during the next three to four days.
