In a major jolt to the ruling BJP in the Uttar Pradesh state, two of their senior OBC ministers have resigned from the party and have joined Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party. Uttar Pradesh minister Dara Singh Chauhan on Wednesday resigned from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led Cabinet. Chauhan, who is the second minister to quit the cabinet and the BJP ahead of the assembly polls next month, joined the Samajwadi Party.
The politicians are changing sides just before the elections in UP as even Congress and SP MLAs in the state switched sides just before the first phase of the elections. Congress MLA Naresh Saini and Samajwadi Party legislator Hari Om Yadav joined the BJP on Wednesday.
In Goa, former BJP leader Michael Lobo along with his wife Delilah on Tuesday joined Congress, a day after resigning from the Goa cabinet and quitting the saffron party.
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) on Wednesday approved the appointment of S Somanath to the post of Secretary, Department of Space and Chairman, ISRO for a combined tenure of three years.
In other news, Meghalaya's deputy CM says that an agreement has almost been reached with Assam on the border issue. "More or less we're almost about to reach agreement in areas that we've already inspected. Now again both CMs have directed to bring out detailed reports& thereafter one more meeting will be held between two CMs," said Meghalaya's Dy CM Prestone Tynsong on border dispute with Assam.

Rescue operation of derailed Bikaner-Guwahati Exp completed: NFR
Guwahati, Jan 13 (PTI) Rescue operation of the derailed Bikaner-Guwahati Express train, which met with an accident naer Maynaguri in West Bengal's Jalpaiguri district on Thursday evening, has been completed, a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) statement said here.
Five persons have died so far and more than 45 injured in the train disaster.
The NFR statement said there were about 1053 passengers onboard at the time of derailment and a special train to ferry the stranded passengers has left for the accident site from New Jalpaiguri at 7.05 pm, the statement said.
Assam special DGP (Law and Order) G P Singh said in a tweet that the relief train with stranded passengers has left the accident site at 9.30 pm and is expected to reach Guwahati around 2 am on January 14.
All stranded passengers have been provided with drinking water and snacks from the pantry car of the train.
Rescue operation has already been completed, the NFR statement said though it did not mention details on casualties and injuries in the mishap.
Senior railway officials along with accident relief train from New Jalpaiguri and New Alipurduar rushed to the site on receipt of information and started the relief and rescue operation.
The NFR general manager has left by a train from Guwahati for the accident site, the statement added.
Nine trains have been diverted through alternative routes following the accident, which include Guwahati-Howrah Saraighat Express, Kamakhya-Anand Vihar Express, New Delhi-Agartala Tejas Rajdhani Express and Trivandrum-Silchar Express.
The Railways have announced ex-gratia of Rs five lakh to the next of kin of each of those killed in the accident, Rs one lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 25,000 for passengers with simple injury, the statement said.
The NFR has already activated several helpline numbers for information about the incident, including at Guwahati (03612731622), Katiahar (06452230692), New Jalpaiguri (9002041951) and Alipurduar (03564234206).
The 15633 Bikaner-Guwahati Express had left Bikaner at 1.45 am on Wednesday and derailed near New Domohani station under Alipurduar Dvision of NFR at around 5 pm on Thursday.
Pb-polls: Farmers' body SSM releases first list of candidates, Rajewal to fight from Samrala
Ludhiana, Jan 12 (PTI) The Sanyukt Samaj Morcha, a political front launched by various farmer bodies for fighting the February 14 Punjab assembly polls, on Wednesday released its first list of 10 candidates.
The list included the names of farmer leader Balbir Singh Rajewal as the outfit's candidate for the Samrala assembly seat. Rajewal is leading the SSM.
The list revealed that farmer leader Prem Singh Bhangu will fight from Ghanaur, Harjinder Singh Tanda from Khadoor Sahib, Ravneet Singh Brar from Mohali and Dr Sukhmandeep Singh from Tarn Taran.
Additionally, Rajesh Kumar will fight from Kartarpur, Ajay Kumar from Phillaur, Ramandeep Singh from Jaiton, Balraj Singh from Qadian and Dr Navdeep Singh from Moga, it said.
While ruling out any alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party a few days back, Rajewal had said they would announce their first list of candidates.
Various Punjab farmer bodies which had taken part in the stir against the Centre's now-repealed farm laws had launched their political front last month and announced to contest the state assembly polls.
Voting for Punjab will be held on February 14 and votes will be counted on March 10.
