Global Covid-19 caseload tops 214.5 mn

The global coronavirus caseload has topped 214.5 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 4.47 million and vaccinations soared to over 5.07 billion, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

In its latest update on Friday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload, death toll and vaccination tally stood at 214,521,191, 4,472,870 and 5,079,847,363, respectively.

The US continues to be the worst-hit country with the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 38,374,252 and 633,479, respectively, according to the CSSE.

In terms of infections, India follows in the second place with 32,558,530 cases.

India's Covid Vaccination Coverage Crosses 61 Cr Mark

As per the provisional report issued by Union Health Ministry, the cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccination coverage crossed 61 crore landmark milestone on Thursday.


At least 61,10,43,573 vaccine doses have been administered so farn with nearly 68 lakh (67,87,305) vaccine doses given yesterday on the 223rd day of the vaccination drive.

India has granted safety permission for restart of Boeing 737 Max operations in the country. Aviation regulator DGCA had suspended the aircraft's operations in March 2019 after two fatal crashes. "This rescission enables operation of Boeing Company Model 737-8 and Boeing Company Model 737-9 airplanes only upon satisfaction of applicable requirements for return to service," the DGCA said in its order.


At present, only SpiceJet has 737 Max in their fleet. It has 13 aircraft of this type. After re-certification, the airline will be able to get 30 or more aircraft for operations. Additionally, the 737Maxs will allow the airline to retire some old fuel guzzlers, leading to higher saving margins. SpiceJet had placed an order for 225 Maxs in 2017, while it has a firm order of more than 150 of these aircraft.
