Revealing about this development, the BJP unit in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad stated that they were unaware of his antecedents when he joined the party on Wednesday morning.

Soon after Kapil Gujjar joined BJP, the photos of his arrest that happened in February this year went viral.

Kapil Gujjar had fired two rounds in the air near the protesting site in Shaheen Bagh. He had opened fire close to the police barricades which was near the protesting stage. He was later nabbed by police personnel and taken into custody.

"Only Hindus will get to call the shots in our country and nobody else (Hamare desh mein sirf Hinduon ki chalegi. Aur kisi ki nahi chalegi)," the man had shouted while he was being taken into custody.

As per reports, Gujjar was welcomed by members of BJP's Ghaziabad office. After joining the saffron-clad, Gujjar said that BJP is a party that works for Hindutva and that is why he chose to join it.

Several people questioned the party over this decision.

Now clarifying its position, the BJP unit has released a statement.

"Today some young individuals from BSP joined the Bharatiya Janata Party and Kapil Gujjar was among them. We were unaware of his controversial Shaheen Bagh case. After getting to know fully about the incident, his membership into the party has been cancelled," the official statement signed by Ghaziabad BJP Metropolitan President Sanjeev Sharma reads.
