New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President JP Nadda on Tuesday appointed Anil Antony as the party's national spokesperson. The appointment comes with immediate effect.

Anil Antony, son of senior Congress leader A K Antony, joined the saffron party in April this year. He was appointed as National Secretary earlier this month.

"BJP National President Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda has appointed Shri Anil Antony, National Secretary as National Spokesperson also of the Bharatiya Janata Party. This appointment comes into immediate effect," the National General Secretary Arun Singh said in a statement.

Antony had quit the Congress in January this year after he defied his party line and criticised a BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The controversy erupted after Antony termed the BBC documentary on Modi a "dangerous precedent".

Antony, who headed the IT cell of the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee, slammed Congress for working for a "single family" instead of working for the country.

"Today, several Congress workers and leaders believe it is their 'dharma' to work for a family. My 'dharma' is to work for the country," Anil Antony had said after joining the BJP. "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a very clear vision of putting India in a leading place in a multi-polar world."
