Bhai Dooj 2018: Bhai Dooj or Bhaiya Dooj is a Hindu festival that comes two days after Diwali. It is a celebration of love between brother and sister just like Raksha Bandhan. On this day, sister applies 'tilak' or 'teeka' on the forehead of her brothers and prays for a long life and good fortune. People celebrate this day in a jolly mood and wear festive clothes. Sisters prepare festive food and get gifts for their brothers. Brothers also get gifts to their sisters and pray for their well-being. The festival is called Bhau Beej among Gujarati, Marathi and Konkani-speaking communities, Bhai Phonta among Bengalis and Bhai Teeka in Nepal.

Bhai Dooj 2018: Importance and significance

According to the reports, there are several myths and folklore associated with the festival. Bhai Dooj claims to have its origin in mythology. It is believed that once the God of Death, Yamaraj, visited his sister the Yamuna. The thrilled Yamuna welcomed her brother with an aarti and applied tilak on Yama’s head. It was her tilak that apparently made Yamraj immortal. She also offered him sweets and gifts. While in return Yama gave her a boon that whoever celebrated Bhai dooj with his sister and took a bath in the holy river of Yamuna would never go to hell.
