AIIMS says Vajpayee stable, responding to treatment; Bhagwat, Manmohan visit him

NEW DELHI: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was on Tuesday responding well to his treatment for urinary tract infection at the AIIMS, which said the condition of veteran BJP leader remained stable. In the latest medical bulletin issued by AIIMS, the hospital said that he "continues to respond well to treatment". Earlier in the day, the AIIMS released a medical bulletin Vajpayee’s health and stated that “his condition is stable for now and has been put on antibiotics since he is suffering through Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). A host of political leaders,  including Former Prime Ministers Manmohan Singh and H.D. Deve Gowda, and RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat visited the ailing leader on Tuesday. In a statement, the AIIMS said, "his condition is stable. He is responding to treatment and is on injectable antibiotics. All his vital parameters are stable. He will continue to be in hospital till infection is controlled". The former prime minister underwent dialysis on Monday and continues to remain in the ICU of the cardio-thoracic centre of AIIMS. The entire corridor of the first-floor ICU has been cordoned off and only patients' attendants or relatives are being allowed after showing proof. Vajpayee is currently suffering through UTI and has been kept on antibiotics. 93-year-old Vajpayee has been admitted in AIIMS since Monday morning. He was taken to the hospital for a routine check-up, but later hospitalised. The BJP, on Monday, had said in a statement that BJP chief Amit Shah had a detailed discussion with the doctors about Vajpayee's treatment and also met the former prime minister's family members at the hospital. Vajpayee was thrice elected the prime minister between 1996 and 1999 and is the only non-Congress prime minister to complete the full term of five years, from 1999 to 2004. As his health deteriorated, he had slowly withdrawn himself from public life and was confined to his residence for years. Vajpayee was the 10th Prime Minister of India and is so far the oldest living Prime Minister of the country.
