Guwahati: As Coronavirus cases in the country continue to rise, Assam government has announced a 14 day lockdown in Kamrup Metropolitan district starting from Monday. Guwahati, which is the part pf the district, will also witness strict lockdown norms. Meanwhile, the urban areas in the state will witness complete shutdown over the weekends. According to the reports, State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma while making the announcements appealed to the citizens to complete their shopping by Sunday as from next week, only medical shops and hospitals will remain open in towns.

News agency ANI quoted Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as saying, "Complete lockdown to be imposed in the entire Kamrup Metropolitan district from the midnight of June 28 for the next 14 days, due to rise in COVID-19 cases. Medical stores to remain open during the lockdown."

Sarma further announced that the Urban areas falling under the jurisdiction of town committees and municipalities will follow the weekend lockdown.

"Weekend lockdown on Saturdays and Sundays to be enforced in urban areas in Assam. Areas falling under the jurisdiction of town committees and municipalities will come under the ambit of the weekend lockdown and will continue until further notice," health minister Sarma said.

The minister further announced that a 12-hour night-curfew starting from 7 pm till 7 am will also be observed across the state from Friday. However, emergency services, banks and air/rail travel with tickets will be allowed till further notice.

Going by the latest updates from Union health ministry, Assam has recorded a total of 6,321 cases of Coronavirus till date. Of these, there are 2,279 active cases in the state. While 4,033 people have been recovered and discharged from the hospitals, nine people lost their lives due to the deadly disease.

On whole, as many as 4,90,401 Coronavirus cases have been recorded in India so far. Nearly 2,85,637 people have recovered while 1,89,463 people are still suffering from the disease. India's death toll till date stands at 15,301.

In the past 24 hours, as many as 17,296 new Coronavirus cases have been detected across India. Meanwhile, 13,940 people have recovered from the disease while 407 have lost their lives due to this deadly pandemic.
