Assam Floods: Toll Rises To 44 With Four More Deaths, 11.09 Lakh People Across 25 Districts Affected

The weather department has issued 'red alert' for Assam and Meghalaya from Tuesday to Thursday, and an 'orange alert' on Friday and Saturday.

New Delhi: Assam continued to reel under heavy rain for the third consecutive day on Thursday with four deaths in the last 24 hours and 11.09 lakh people of 25 districts affected due to the flood and landslides, the state government said. According to the Assam government, the water level of Manas, Pagladiya, Puthimari, Kopili, Gaurang and Brahmaputra rivers is flowing above the danger level mark in many places.

According to a report by news agency PTI, two children were crushed to death after their house collapsed due to landslide in Azad Nagar area of Goalpara district, taking the toll to 44. The deceased have been identified as 11-year-old Hussain Ali and eight-year-old Asma Khatoon.

In Guwahati, three persons were injured in Noonmati area due to multiple landslides during the day.

According to the report, at least 18 Assam districts are still experiencing heavy rain, with areas in Kamrup Metro, Kamrup, Nalbari and Barpeta flooded on Thursday.

Incessant rain and waterlogging have put life out of gear in Guwahati. Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagae, Zoo Road, Six Mile, Noonmati, Bhootnath, Maligaon figuring among the worst-affected areas.

In the wake of the heavy showers, deputy commissioners in Lower Assam districts have issued directives to educational institutions to suspend classes till Saturday as the Regional Meteorological Centre's warned of 'heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rainfall in Assam and Meghalaya'.

Notably, the weather department has issued 'red alert' for Assam and Meghalaya from Tuesday to Thursday, and an 'orange alert' on Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, district authorities have opened seven camps and nine relief distribution centres for assisting the flood-hit locals.

A total of 1,224 people have taken shelter in the relief camps, with 677 in Kamrup Metropolitan alone, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority bulletin.
