New Delhi: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, today remembered former Prime Minister of India, Chaudhary Charan Singh, on his birth anniversary and demanded that he should be conferred with Bharat Ratna.


Taking to Twitter to remember the former Prime Minister, Yadav wrote, “Hearty tributes to the most respected Chaudhary Charan Singh ji, remembering him on his birth anniversary! Today, on the occasion of 'Kisan Diwas', we strongly demand to give 'Bharat Ratna' to former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh ji, who dedicated his life for the farmers and the country.”


The Government of India in 2001 had declared December 23, birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, as National Farmers’ Day. This decision was taken to recognise his contribution for the upliftment of farmers and development of the agricultural sector.






Members of the government and opposition also paid their tributes to Chaudhary Charan Singh and extended their greetings to the farmers of the country. 


Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh tweeted, “I bow to the former Prime Minister of the country and the top leader of farmers, Chaudhary Charan Singhji on his birth anniversary. He contributed to the development journey of India and worked lifelong for the empowerment of the weaker sections of the society. He has also played an effective role in strengthening democracy in the country.”





Whereas senior leader of Congress party and Uttar Pradesh in charge of the All India Congress Committee wrote: “Farmers will take decisions related to farmers. Children of farmers will also become SP-DM.” Tributes to former Prime Minister Shri Chaudhary Charan Singh ji on his birth anniversary, a strong voice of the rights and interests of the farmers. 






 






Chaudhary Charan Singh had served as the 5th Prime Minister of India between July 28, 1979 and January 14, 1980.
